SUMMARY:Wild Ones Milwaukee Southwest/Wehr
DESCRIPTION:Wild Ones is the only national organization promoting the use of native plants in natural landscaping to promote a healthy biodiverse landscape. Our own Wehr chapter meets year-round to share their passion and knowledge of native landscaping with each other and the public. Members host tours of their naturally landscaped yards\, do seed collecting\, take field trips to local natural areas and offer educational programs to the public. Programs the second Saturday of the month from October through April offer presentations on native plant landscape design; woodland\, prairie\, wetland and savanna plant communities; native plant support of wildlife and native plant propagation and much more. These meeting are open to the public at no charge. (The Wehr Nature Center charges a small parking fee). \nBumble Bee Queens\, Nests\, and Spring Wildflowers \nPresented by Dr. Jeff Karron\, Professor of Biology at UW-Milwaukee \nProgram from 1:15-3:15 pm  \nDr. Jeff Karron’s talk features striking slow-motion videography to highlight the interdependence of bumblebee queens and spring-flowering perennial plants. Early blooming native perennials provide the essential food resources queens need to survive\, establish nests\, and successfully raise their first brood. In turn\, many spring-flowering plants depend heavily on bumble bees for effective pollination and seed production. All video and photography featured in this presentation were filmed in high-quality prairie and woodland sites across southeastern Wisconsin. The talk highlights the importance of conserving and restoring early-season floral resources to sustain bumblebee populations.
