Join us for a monthly ecology walk at various Milwaukee County Natural Areas, where we’ll learn, observe, and ID native flowers! On our walk, you’ll also learn about the characteristics of the native plant community that we will explore.

Whether you love ladybugs, dig dung beetles, or are just a curious critter-lover, there’s something for everyone! You can learn more about the event here: www.wehrnaturecenter.com/event/bug-day/Our creature feature today is the Cecropia Moth! It is the largest moth species in North America. Females are bigger than males. They have a wingspan of 5-6 inches which is as wide as a human hand. Believe it or not this moth has no mouth parts as an adult and does not do any feeding. This moth does all its eating as a caterpillar. Not all moths are like this. We have many moth species that eat both as caterpillar as well as when they are adults. In fact, some moths such as sphinx moths are amazing pollinators of flowers. You may have even seen some sphinx moth visitors in your garden.The image features a large, green caterpillar resting on a slender brown branch, surrounded by green leaves. The caterpillar, which displays vivid blue and yellow spots along its body, has a plump, segmented appearance. Its head is slightly darker green with a hint of an orange hue and several small features resembling eyes. Scattered along the caterpillar's body are tiny black and yellow knob structures meant to deter predators. In the bottom right corner, an inset circle presents a close-up of a large moth perched against a natural background. This moth exhibits shades of brown, cream, and red, with distinctive eye-like patterns on its wings. The overall composition highlights both the caterpillar and the moth, emphasizing the transition from caterpillar to moth.
